Is The Health Insurance Mandate Still In Place?

     Despite President Trump’s Inauguration Day ACA Executive Order, the IRS continues to impose the penalty on those who do not have minimum essential coverage.  In response to a letter from Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI), the IRS maintained “there was no provision in the ACA for waiver of the mandate penalty and the Executive Order does not change the law; the legislative provisions of the ACA are still in force until changed by the Congress.”

The following is the per person cost for 2017:

  • $695 per adult
  • $347.50 per child under 18
  • Maximum: $2,085
  • If  you are uncovered for only 1 to 2 months, you don’t pay the fee.  If you have coverage for part of the year, the fee is 1/12 of the annual amount for each month you (or your tax dependents) don’t have coverage.
